I have questions about GPS hand held devices before I buy one?

Posted in: hand held gps |

We go hikeing repeling, and caveing in the spring and summer we always take our cell phones but what about a GPS device? We have never owned one before but are looking to purchase one. Do they require service like a cell phone where you have to pay a monthly charge? We need something with North Georgia topo maps are the maps already on them or will we have to down load them? My questions may sound like Im stupid but I have no experiace with these divices! I need a hand held one any suggestions on which one I should purchase and how much it will cost me?

I have always liked Garmin and after you buy it the only thing else you need to get for it is updated maps. So when you purchase one make sure that you have one with preloaded maps or at least a disc so you can put in maps. But they run off of satellites. A Garmin Rhino is pretty cool because it also has the 2 way walkie-talkie in with it and if there are other people around you with one you can put in there information and it will show you where their location is if it is in within a certain area. I think it will run you within the 200 dollar range. Good Luck

Your question is not stupid. I use the Garmin Etrex Legend. I use it for geocaching, check out http://www.geocaching.com to find out all about that. It is a relatively inexpensive unit, at about $125. It will set a way point at your car or camp, so you can find your way back. It will retrace your steps. It requires no monthly service. The way it works is it hooks in, for free, to the sat elites in orbit around the planet, and they triangulate your location. It comes loaded with basic maps of North and South America, and some other places. Not sure about topo, but you can get them for little, if any, charge.
