I'm in the market for a hand-held GPS. Does it require any softwear to install? I hope not.?

I've looked at dozens of different GPS via websites but none say anything about having to download infomration to the GPS via the computer. I'm not very computer literate, so I'm hoping the computer is not necessary. Thank you.
The average hand-held GPS, for hiking and the like, don't require any software installation. Turn them on and let them acquire the satellites. I would recommend one that has at least basic maps rather than just puts up a breadcrumb trail on a otherwise blank screen. I do think Garmin is one of the better units.

It really depends on what you want the GPS to do. Most will tell you your location, display VERY basic maps, and allow you to mark places (called waypoints) in its memory. The computer comes in if you want to add maps or copy the waypoints or tracks. If you can afford it, go with the Garmin GPSMAP 60csx.
